The sticky summer months that are just around the corner are no time for a sweaty layer of makeup, but if you ever leave the house or have a life, you'll have some sins that need covering up. Why not redouble your efforts now so that when beach season starts, your skin is ready for makeup-free closeup?
Here are some easy, failsafe ways to get the glow by summer:
CLEANSE PROPERLY Studies have shown that most of us apply facial cleanser for a scant 20 seconds - leaving a pore-blocking layer that creates breakouts and reduces the effectiveness of whatever treatment creams & serums you then apply. Before cleansing, first break down the dirt with a skin cleasing oil - try cult fave Shu Uemura. Then apply your regular cleanser and get rid of remaining dirt, applying for at least a minute.
TREAT ANY PROBLEMS If you're worried about those fine lines and other ungraceful signs of aging, try the Patricia Wexler M.D. Anti-Aging Starter Kit (gentle enough even for my sensitive, easily irritated skin). It contains trial/travel sizes of her complete regime - cleanser, scrub, skin regenerating serum, eye cream, night cream, and skin brightening SPF 30 day cream. The products are easy to use and happily non-greasy.
PROTECT, PROTECT, PROTECT While I've found the Wexler anti-aging regime to be a fabulous combination of effectiveness and affordability, after using it religiously for a few weeks, I started noticing some dreaded hyperpigmentation near my jawline. What saved the day? After moisturizing, smooth on a layer of VMV Hypoallergenics Armada Face & Body Shield SPF 60. It provides such strong protection your skin can lighten naturally, and most importantly, it's amazingly light and non-greasy (my primary beef with effective sunblocks) which means you're more apt to use it religiously each morning. Don't waste any more money on other sunscreens - this is your skin's new BFF.
FAKE GREAT SKIN If you're religious about your skincare regime and daily sunscreen, your skin can't help but improve...which means less foundation. However, for the office, a date, cocktails, or anywhere you might run into your ex, it's a bit soon to face your public bare-faced. To appear polished rather than too makeup'y, quickly sweep Jane Iredale PurePressed pressed mineral foundation over your face (yes, their compact Handi brush with dense goat hair cut straight across is a worthwhile investment) and if needed, cover up any blemishes by dabbing on a bit more with a cotton swab. Then set the powder by lightly spritzing your face with their evaporation-resistant D20 Hydration spray or Evian Brumisateur. As an added benefit, the Jane Iredale makeup provides an additional layer of SPF 20 and won't irritate your fabulous skin-in-the-making.
MINIMUM MAKEUP FOR MAX IMPACT Never underestimate the magical beauty powers of blush! A great new one is Max Factor's ColorGenius Blush which contains three easily-blendable shades. Simply swirl your brush in the brighter shades and apply directly to the apples of your cheeks - translation: turn your head slightly away from the mirror, smile, and apply the blush lightly on the top of the puffy part, blending back toward your ears; then make your most fabulous Blue Steel face and apply a touch of the darker shade in the hollow. Sweep on a natural-looking eyeshadow like Neutrogena Nourishing Eye Duo - I use my fingers to cover the entire lid and browbone with the base shade (which contains soothing soy and Vitamins A, C & E) and then dab on the darker accent shade half on the crease and half on the lid (creating just enough definition to make it look like I bothered to spend time looking decent before leaving the house - all in the space of about 30-45 seconds). A few lashings of everyone's mascara obsession, DiorShow, a sweep of Wet n Wild Ultimate Brow Color and Set, a slick of Borba nutraceuticals lip tint in Soft Kiss (nude) - and off you go, you glam goddess, you.
