Armani Prive, Spring 2007 - one-shouldered frocks for any mood or body type.
Typically, the term "one-shouldered" conjurs up visions of a 70s Halston disco dress. However, the recent Armani Prive showed just how elegant and feminine one-shouldered dresses could actually be. Rendered in varying shades of grey, from slate to dove, they were shaped into a body-skimming A-line, a stiffer version with draped tiers at the hips, a bubble skirt, and full-on sexy hourglass - ie. something flattering for almost any figure type. While the exposed shoulder is overtly sexy, the muted gray hue keeps it downright ladylike.
The key to pulling off a one-shoulder dress with panache is pairing the dress with pared-down accessories and neutral shoes. However, if you're feeling flirty & girlie, say "yes" to a fun floral cocktail hat or hair ornament.
A scary factoid: over the past 15 years the number of people under 18 opting for plastic surgery has jumped nearly 100 percent.
Why? Procedures have become cheaper, more streamlined and less invasive. (A week over spring break is plenty of time for recovery.)
But should anyone under the age of consent ever be allowed to get cosmetic surgery for purely cosmetic reasons?
There are cases where the right procedure can turn a child around from being depressed to self-confident, explains Michael C. Ciano, M.D. - a plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Thousand Oaks, California (just outside of Los Angeles). According to Dr. Ciano, peer pressure and media images of the 'perfect' body are so intense that more than a few kids develop psychological hang-ups about their bodies. Ashamed of the way they look and fearful that they don't measure up, they obsess about becoming as skinny as the CW or MTV celebrity du-jour and then how to fix their own seeming imperfections such as protruding ears, enlarged breasts and unattractive noses. Thankfully, however, not all physicians are quick to operate. "I'm very conservative," he says. "It's best to make certain the motivation is acceptable."
"I would say that my work captures life's moments in detail," remarks Alex Soldier, an award-winning contemporary jewelry designer specializing in gold, platinum, precious gemstones & diamonds. For the true artist does not create the boundaries, but rather transcends them." His innovative, unusual designs are available at AlexSoldier.com.

In the couture, designers bring to life fantasy ensembles involving the most expensive fabrics, unusual trims, cool color palettes, and labor-intensive contruction techniques & tricks that will never see the inside of a factory. The more critically acclaimed & written about a show is, the better a brand will fare. Those ostensibly money-losing $100,000 couture dresses actually establish the brand; in fact, they are the most effective form of advertising, inducing otherwise rational fashionistas to willingly waitlist & line up for the privilege of shelling out hundred$$$ for accessories & sunglasses, and over $1200 for
bags.
Because they are primarily about theatricality & creativity, Haute Couture shows are incredibly alluring. The best designers are like canaries in the mine of the pop culture consciouness: they possess finely-tuned antenae. When a theme, idea, or even color resonates, it shows up on the runway - and we're afforded a peek directly into the zeitgeist. At present, the mood seems to be madonna-meets-geisha, with a dash of Victorian prim.
Starting with the mist-filled, romantic tableaux which opened Givenchy, to the nimbus-like headgear at Jean Paul Gaultier, full-on geisha makeup & coiffure adornments at Christian Dior, and yards of floaty but body-concealing pastel fabrics everywhere, it's as if we've adopted a 19th century view of sexiness, when a mere flash of ankle could inspire torrid love poetry. Muted metallic flounces, waist cinchers and corsetry seemed less like adornment and more like armor (almost reminscent of a chastity-protecting iron maiden), as did mask-like makeup & hair.

With spring comes the urge to spruce things up both at home & personally, which begs the burning question: leave it, dye it, or just add some highlights? A head full of blonde streaks seems too summery for March and April, while raven-hued tresses can can feel heavy and tired when the sun finally shines again.
For season-appropriate hair color, Robert Craig has some easy tips on a softer, gentler transition.
ADD HIGHLIGHTS & LOWLIGHTS Subtle highlights create a fresher look, without going overboard. "Adding dimension to your hair is an easy way to eventually change your overall color," advises Craig. "By using lowlights in combination with highlights, you create depth in the hair, something that monotone, dark hair lacks." (For a soft, lowlight look, try Color by Robert Craig in Golden Brown)
OBEY THE HAIR LAW When it's being lightened, hair goes through seven stages: black, brown, red, red-gold, gold, yellow, and then pale yellow. Since every shade of hair color has 10 levels, trying to go directly from a jet black to platinum blonde - or level 4 brown to a level 9 blonde - cannot happen overnight...if you want your hair to look its best. Instead of a dramatic one-time makeover, think degrees of change. "Develop an interim stage for your hair color," suggests Craig. "Find a medium ground that suits your skin tone, whether it be honey brown or light auburn, and let your hair become comfortable in the middle zone. Later, when you choose to go all the way for the summer, it won't be as much of a shock."
DO YOUR HAIRWORK "Too many women choose a color that doesn't suit their skin tone," notes Craig. "Unfortunately, platinum blonde doesn't look good on every head, but everyone can find a shade that's right for them." He suggests using the silver and gold test. Check yourself: what kind of jewelry looks best on you? If you are a silver girl, you look best in cooler tones, which range from black to platinum. If gold is more flattering, you have a warmer tone, and look best with pale golden blondes to rich dark auburn and brown.
GET GLOSSY Winter months can make hair dry and dull, so Craig suggests using a hair gloss between colorings to condition, refresh color, and add shine. (Try Robert Craig Clear - apply once a month for 15 minutes.)
