Behold a Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby! Artist Kenny Scharf brings his Astral Uber Cadillac to Art Basel Miami Beach on December 7. FASHIONTRIBES TRAVEL BLOG

In conjunction with Art Basel Miami Beach, renowned pop artist Kenny Scharf recently announced a special exhibition and event December 7, 2006, at 10 PM, poolside at the legendary Andre Balazs-owned art deco hotel The Raleigh on Miami Beach. The exhibition kicks off with an interpretative dance by Scharf and a group of fellow artists, and features a single work of art and marks the second public showing of a mixed-media installation known as the Astral Uber Cumulo Nimbus Atlantian Express: a flawless 1960 Cadillac Coupe DeVille - with only 5,200 original miles - that is a psychedelic collision of past and future. It is reminiscent of the artist's 1985 black light installation for Art in Action, at the Sogetsu Museum in Tokyo, Japan, where Scharf's customized 1973 Cadillac, Dream Car exhibit opened in a celebration that included performances with friends Ann Magnuson and John Sex.

Inside the car, mint condition antique upholstery is transformed into a den of pop culture and puckish humor. Below the rooftop tiara, hood ornaments are redefined as florescent brains explode from twin fuchsia totem poles, and an elfin dinosaur stands watch over grinning orbs zooming through aqua vapors. In the trunk, a revolving disco ball, rope lights and mirrors cast streaks of light on animated characters spinning gleefully atop twirling turntables - a nod to Scharf's celebrated closet installations. "The exhibit is a combo of the futuristic -- the Cadillac, and the past -- the caveman dance, resulting in a time splat, when the future and the past collide, loosely. It's all time, no time, every time," notes Scharf, who first made a splash in the eighties, in tandem with roommate Keith Haring and friends Jean Michel Basquiat & Andy Warhol.

Over the past two decades, Scharf's work has appeared in some of the world's most prominent galleries and museums including the Guggenheim and Whitney Museums in New York; the Ludwig Museum in Cologne, Germany; the Museu de Arte Moderna, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; the Salvador Dali Museum, St. Petersburg, Florida, and the Vincent Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. "Scharf is an artist of overload," explains art critic Carter Ratcliff. "He is also an artist of remarkable clarity, which means that the effect of overload is not the result of clutter or crowding. In Scharf's universe, the idea of form is inseparable from the effect of motion…Because Scharf has made himself permeable to our culture, his art can baffle interpretation. The label he invented for himself, 'Pop Surrealist,' is helpful here."

As the sister event of Art Basel in Switzerland, Art Basel Miami Beach is regarded not only as one of the most important art shows stateside, but throughout the world as well. Event organizers estimate that more than 2000 artists and 200 exclusive international galleries will exhibit works. Exhibition sites are located in the Miami's beautiful Art Deco District, within walking distance of the beach, noted hotels and acclaimed restaurants.

The deets on Kenny Scharf's mixed-media installation featuring his Astral Uber Cadillac at Art Basel Miami Beach:

  • WHEN: December 7th @ 10 pm - an interpretative dance by Scharf and a group of fellow artists kicks things off

Out of Work Artist or Illustrator? If You're Handy with the Chalk, Whole Foods Might Have a Blackboard Gig at a Store Near You. FASHIONTRIBES POP CULTURE BLOG

Whole_foods Whole_foods_1 (Some of Katie Lanciano's work for Whole Foods Markets - photos: Katie Lanciano)

Say what you will about Whole Foods, but they sure know how to get attention.

According to a recent piece on NPR.org, the grocery chain employs artists at all of their 183 American stores. For $13 an hour, plus health benefits & a store discount, the full-time in-house artistes keep the stores' chalkboards finely decorated. Artists like Philadelphia's Katie Lanciano like to use their ephemeral medium to reflect local life, such as rendering melting clocks and cow skulls when an exhibit of Salvador Dali's work opened there. "It's like a revolving gallery," she notes about her chalkboard canvases. "People get to see my artwork every day."

FASHIONTRIBES 5 MIN. PODCAST: Online Fashion’s Cinderella Story: Net-a-Porter.com. FASHIONTRIBES FASHION BLOG & PODCAST

Pcn_net_a_porter_natalie_massenet (Natalie Massenet, founder of Net-a-Porter.com)

According to conventional wisdom – if there actually is such a thing when it comes to that fast-growing infant known as the Internet – companies that enjoy the highest degree of retail success online are those that are first and foremost brick-and-mortar stores who just happen to have an online presence.

However, British fashion e-tailer Net-a-Porter.com, is proving that the tried-and-true apparently isn’t.

Started six years ago by Natalie Massenet, the website’s 2004 profits were 227,041 GBP ($431,400), while 2005 sales jumped to 21.3 million pounds ($40.5 million) with profits of 1.8 million GBP ($3.42 million); revenues are predicted to double this year – yet again! – in keeping with the company’s amazing growth since its inception. What is the secret’s to Net-a-Porter’s success? "We're about fashion, products and service," Massenet recently explained to WWD. "We always saw Net-a-porter as fashion opportunity more than anything else, a chance to provide women with the most extraordinary fashion service."

Cleverly, the company’s strategy has combined two important factors: stocking hard-to-get "it" brands like Roland Mouret, Corto Moltedo, Vera Wang, Issa, Jovovich Hawk, and Burberry Prorsum - "Overnight, we became the global stockist for Burberry Prorsum in Australia, the Far East and parts of Europe," notes Massenet – and serving them up in an editorial (rather than traditional retail) atmosphere reminiscent of a glossy high-fashion magazine. Rather than simply presenting the fashions as disparate units of clothing, Net-a-Porter presents them as looks, on figure and fully styled with accessories, providing shoppers with a context and a clue how to wear everything. For red carpet attendees, they offer advice on how to get dolled up for London’s Serpentine summer party, what to wear to the Met’s Costume Institute gala in May, and even how Californians should dress during winter. The site also includes fashion layouts, tips from editors, interviews with designers, and trend reports. Their Net-a-Porter Notes is published twice a year in diary form to coincide with fashionweek, and incorporates a catalogue, magazine, and the best looks of the season.

Massenet has correctly noted that a large part of her site’s success is based on the fact that they view themselves not as a dot-com but as a fashion business. Their strength is providing an editorial context for the pricey designer fashions they sell. In fact, it’s similar to the reason shoppers seek out blogs: now that they’ve seen the goods, they want someone with taste they trust to curate and edit down the choices for them, and then explain what to do with them. Ivanka Trump Steps Out in a Striking Black Full-Skirted & Be-Ribboned Evening Coat. What a Great Look to Add to Any Wardrobe. FASHIONTRIBES FASHION BLOG

Ivanka_trump (Ivanka Trump out on the town; photo: I'm Not Obsessed)

With ladylike mania on the runways, the very proper evening coat is a fashion item making a strong comeback. This one could almost masquerade as a dress, and the nipped-in waist & full skirt couldn't be more flattering.

Finding this look at a reasonable pricepoint requires either scouring vintage stores & sites for 40s & 50s evening coats, or, yes, DIY (either you or your fave tailor).  Vogue's re-issued vintage patterns are made-to-order for these type of garments; in this case, simply customize a full-skirted shirtwaist dress by adding in both the belt loops and the cutaway in the front. (And then have fun selecting a gorgous silk ribbon to match whatever frock you're wearing underneath.) The great thing about DIY is that you can select whatever fabric you've got your heart set on, and the final product will fit you perfectly.

FASHIONTRIBES 5 MIN. PODCAST: R.I.P. Robert Altman of "Ready-to-Wear" Fame: We Miss You! FASHIONTRIBES FASHION BLOG & PODCAST

Altman_ready_to_wear

Director Robert Altman recently died of cancer at the age of 81. His extensive body of work took on myriad topics from life in the army during the Korean War (MASH), to Hollywood (The Player), the Western (McCabe and Mrs. Miller), and British "manor" life (Gosford Park) – and of course, the fashion business in 1994’s Prêt-à-Porter, aka Ready-to-Wear when it came out stateside.

The movie included a A-list Hollywood’ers Forest Whitaker, Julia Roberts, Tim Robbins, Lauren Bacall, and Sophia Lauren, and fashion A-listers Jean Paul Gaultier, Christian Lacroix, Issey Miyake and Sonya Rykiel (whose daughter, Natalie, was one of the film’s consultants). "We knew each other for 10 years before the filming of Prêt-à-Porter, Nathalie Rykiel told WWD, after Altman attended one of her mother’s fashion shows and fell under the sway of the circus (fabulous, yes, but still a circus) that is the fashion world. "He realized that the fashion industry could be as rich and profound as Nashville"or MASH, she said. "We have lost one of the greatest directors and a great friend."

Although the Rykiel ladies were Altman-friendly, many were not. "When it emerged that Altman wanted to include real-life fashion designers, models and editors, the big question became, ‘Should I be in it or not?'" explains WWD about a mention by W magazine in April of 1994. "The whole project frightens a subculture in which even the most outlandish figures realize just how easy it would be to ridicule them or parody their eccentricities," reported W. "But Altman insists, ‘I think it's going to be a celebration. And it's going to be beautiful, because there are a lot of beautiful people involved.'" Although considered a critical flop, the deliciously camp murder mystery – at the season’s hottest fashion show no less, making everyone a suspect - it speaks to the artistic risks Altman willingly took on. "His biggest criterion for a movie was that he shouldn't do anything he'd done before, so he never got stuck not reinventing himself because he was like a kid, explains Bob Balaban, an actor who also penned Gosford Park. "Everything was fresh for him all the time." (via WWD - movie available at Amazon.com)

Leopard Makes for Some Splashy Outerwear. Take a Tip from Tuleh & Rock an Out-There Animal Coat. You'll Be Glad you Did. FASHIONTRIBES FASHION BLOG

Tuleh_1 Tuleh - Fall 2006

This gorgeous number from Tuleh simply drips glam from every pore (hair follicle?). The trick, however, with this much fur (& faux fur) is your attitude when wearing...rock star: good, Park Avenue, not so good.

To channel your inner Mick Jagger instead of aging dowager, rock it in a throwaway manner - ie. toss it over jeans, throw it on over all-black, but give it a rest when you're headed somewhere formal like the opera...unless of course, you're in your fanciest, tightest, most badass black leather pants.

Some fun & glam faux fur coats to add a lil' taste o' Tuleh to your wardrobe:

Learn to Pack Light - Truly Light - and Reap Myriad Rewards, Both Mental & Physical. FASHIONTRIBES TRAVEL BLOG

Packing_light_1

A recent piece in WashingtonPost.com delved into the why's & wherefore's of packing light - really, really light. In addition to the purely physical rewards of tackling a two week trip with just a carry-on - no endless waits at check-in or baggage claim; no worries about lost luggage; less need for expensive taxis to shuttle you & your enormous bag to & from the airport - there are myriad psychological rewards: "There's something liberating about traveling with only a carry-on: You're no longer a slave to your stuff. You don't need to spend a lot of time planning what to take when your entire wardrobe revolves around a pair of black pants and a couple of tops. Not obsessing about your appearance brings humility and perspective. That's right! You become a better person. Unencumbered, you're free to focus on what's really important: your destination and how to make the most of it."

Yes, it sounds oh-so-good in theory, but most of us have succumbed to the urge to schlep everything with...so how is this feat of packing finesse actually accomplished? Leaving your fashion vanity at home is a good start. "That old traveler's tip about packing only what you think you'll need, then eliminating half of that? Believe it. Yes, you'll have to sacrifice some dignity when you end up wearing your wingtips to the beach. But you'll be liberated from the tyranny of luggage."

Some tips for traveling light:

NO SAUSAGE CASING SUITCASES "Don't be that person who stuffs her rollaboard so full that it jams the aisles and requires the kindness of strangers to wrestle it into the overhead bin. If you can't lift your own carry-on into the bin, do us all a favor and check your luggage." That being said, don't limit yourself to the draconian minisculeness of a weekender tote. Get a 22 inch bag that just fits into those "Is your bag too big?" size measuring devices at the airport.

THINK BLACK
Stylish & impervious to (visible) stains, there isn't anything black (or a similar neutral like brown or gray) doesn't go with. It's also easily dressed up or down.  " I get more mileage out of a pair of black pants than an undertaker. Add a black jacket or sweater and you've got your base; supplement with a few colorful tops and scarves and you're the picture of urban chic."

PLAN TO WEAR EACH OUTFIT...A LOT! Regardless of who you meet on your journey - on the plane, the subway, the cafe, wherever - chances are, you'll never see them again, so be fashionably fearless and wear the same ensemble repeatedly.

For more helpful tips that will whittle down your suitcase's waistline, check out The Travel Snob.

Revenge of the Otaku! Japan's Nerds Get Creative & Get Decked Out in Real Life Role Playing. FASHIONTRIBES POP CULTURE BLOG

Npr_nerd_1 Npr_nerd_2 Npr_nerd_3 (left to right: Kai, aka Chosokabe Motochika the 16th century warrior; a French-maid outfitted worker in a "maid" cafe with a cartoon portrait that hangs on the walls of the cafe; in full regalia as a character from the game Super Street Fighter 2 - all photos: Louisa Lim for NPR)

Given the $4 billion spent by Japan's nerds - or Otaku - in 2004, Nerdland is big business; if the large attendance of 200,000 at Tokyo's recent Game Show is anything to judge by, it's becoming positively chic to be a geek according to a recent article on NPR.org"I'm a nerd. This is Japan's new culture. To me, it's just one of the ways of showing your creativity," explains Kai, a 24 year old office worker by day whose devotion to "costume play" means she now spends her weekends sporting the elaborate sartorial get-ups of her favorite (male) video game warrior. "I don't want to be a man. I just like cosplay." According to experts that study this subculture, computer gaming is now crossing the line from mere hobby and becoming a way of life. Not only does it offer like-minded individuals a fully formed community, but within its confines, you can assume any identity you desire.

While the external trappings of the super hero are all good and well, some things never change: the hardcore nerd vs. the cute chick. Their headscratching solution to the tongue-tied problem? The maid cafe, where French-maid clad women greet conquering heroes with a friendly "Hello, master" and a curtsy. "Here men live out their fantasies -- being waited on hand and foot by maids whose costumes come straight out of erotic comic books. This fantasy world has been taken one step further, with cartoon pictures of each of the real-life waitresses lining the walls."

Can a revenge of the maids be far behind?

FASHIONTRIBES 5 MIN. PODCAST: Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, Makes Jewelry for a Good Cause. FASHIONTRIBES FASHION BLOG & PODCAST

Pcn_sarah_ferguson_jewelry_1 Pcn_sarah_ferguson_jewelry_2 (Some looks from Sarah Ferguson's jewelry collaboration with K&G Creations.)

Collaborating with K&G Creations of Boca Raton, Florida, Ferguson is bringing out two jewelry lines, a fashion’y collection of 400 pieces, and the Sarah Ferguson Signature Collection of 600, one-of-a-kind pieces.

In addition to classic jewelry designs, the lines will showcase Art Deco & more modern influences. Materials will include yellow & white gold – 14k & 18k - colored quartz, Tahitian and Baroque pearls and a colorless crystal known as Moissanite, found in meteors. "A lot of people say, 'Why would you do Moissanite?' and I do it because I think you can wear beautiful things and give people a chance to afford them," Ferguson told WWD. "That's why I like it. Everyone would expect you to do diamonds."

The jewelry will be sold in Macy's, Lord & Taylor and Belk, with a wide price range: $400 for 1 carat studs to a limited edition, 18 carat necklace for $18,000. However, it’s all for a good cause, as Ferguson will be donating her royalties the Sarah Ferguson Foundation, which supports children's charities. "I really love the fact that, just by doing this, we can bring a smile to a child's face. That's what revs my engines." (via WWD)

White is Right, as Christina Aguilera Proves in an All-White Skinny Suit & Glam Accessories on her "Back to Basics" Tour. A Festive Look to Borrow this Season. FASHIONTRIBES FASHION BLOG

C_aguilera_2  (Christina Aguilera performing on her Back to Basics tour - photo: Splash News Online)

Head-to-toe white is a somewhat risky proposition, even during the best of weather conditions. However, if you can avoid being splashed on - or splashing/spilling/dripping on yourself - it's undeniably fabulous. This dapper retro-gangster look is mighty supa-fly, especially with a dashing fedora and dripping-glamour fur.

However, if all-white seems a bit too, well, white, opt for less blinding shades of ivory, winter white, and cream - they render the same effect, but without the blinding factor.
