With the launch of shopmary-kateandashley.com, the global market will now be able to dress like the sisters. "We know that overall online sales are growing exponentially across the board," executive vice president Jill Zimmerman recently told WWD. "Plus…[it] broadens consumer interest and supports the brand in the offline world as well. There is proof that having an online store actually drives people into stores." The store will mirror the sisters’ online brand presence at mary-kateandashley.com with its official fan club, e-zine, and the full line available for purchase. Olsen fashion & beauty tips have been added to the mix, as well as giveaways, promotions, and the occasional free shipping offer.

The Olsens are famous for being very fashion-y, and frequently set trends around the globe. As a result, they have enjoyed phenomenal success with their brand, avoiding the problems facing a celeb “designers” like Jessica Simpson who was even slapped with a lawsuit for failing to promote – or even publicly wear – clothing with her name on the license. The classic "it was a dark & stormy night" start to many a pulp fiction novel could just as easily apply to the fall 2007 fashion palette, recently on display at Première Vision Pluriel. Black seeped its way into everything, from gray – a newly important shade, even for spring 2007 – to metallics, to tone-on-tone mixed shades of black. Fabrics were similarly heavy and complex: hefty cashmere jerseys, durable wool/nylon blends, leather-like nylon knits, and silk tulle backed with black foil. Companies like Mantero showed black-on-black silk jacquard crafted from chenille yarns and a "slightly chintzed" base. At Linton Tweeds, navy and brown were mixed to shiny, but dark, effect, while Clerici Tessuto’s black damask was decidedly Balenciaga’esque. Variations on guipure lace – traditionally more of a warm weather choice – are now firmly ensconced in the fall lineup.

"The wools are dense and crisp, a look I feel is very modern right now," Tia Cibani, creative director of Ports 1961 recently told WWD. "Technical finishes on natural fabrics are very strong, and I like all the lacquers on silk." Others were more circumspect. "I was a bit worried at first," says designer Tracy Reese. "But as time went on, I accepted the edginess. It will be hard to incorporate this feel into my line — I’m not exactly known for it. Let’s just say it will be an exciting challenge."

Others, such as Lazaro Hernandez, one half of the Proenza Schouler design team with Jack McCollough, are equally hesitant about this new direction. "There is definitely a disconnect because all the stores are asking for the opposite," explains Hernandez. "We love creating things with volume, so it’s what looks right to us now, but it’s not exactly practical." But many are equally excited about this newly sophisticated – and less heavily decorated & ornamented – fabric palette which is more demanding technically. "There is definitely no room for faux pas with these colors or these fabrics," said Hervé Pierre, creative director of Carolina Herrera. "Everything is very clean." Which means that bad design, cuts & draping have nowhere to hide. "Moving forward, I think the feel will be less crafty and more about finishes," says insider-fave designer Alexander Wang. "The fabric itself, the way it’s constructed, will be the focus. Essentially, the fabric will make the garment what it is." (via WWD)

A recent surprise at the spring 2007 fashion shows was the continued popularity of both dresses and the color gray.

A good way to get max fashion mileage is to combine both, especially in a wrap- or shirt-dress. Not only are they chic in-and-of themselves, they can easily be dressed up or down with a simple change of footwear, bag & accessories.

For fall, why not pair your new gray dress with fall's trendy platform Mary Janes? Just because an object of clothing is green, doesn’t have to automatically mean it is required to be a) made from hemp, b) shapeless....or any number of the other decidedly non-fashionable attributes that tend to get associated with eco-friendly fashion. "I’d love to see the day when we’re no longer divided into ethical and nonethical fashion," Orsola de Castro, designer of the eco-enlightened label From Somewhere recently told WWD.

De Castro recently helped curate Estethica, the British Fashion Council’s nod to "ethical fashion" at The Exhibition @ London Fashion Week, focusing on fashion that - while green, eco-friendly, and fair trade - was primarily about good design. "Of course, being ethical sets limits, but that encourages creativity."

Rather than guilting people into buying green, the Esthetica designers are employing a stealth approach: use cool design - rather than guilt - to further the cause of ethical fashion. "It was more important that my work is a fashion statement so it can provoke real change. That way we can show that sustainable can be beautiful," says Deborah Milner of London’s Ecoture - financed by the Estee Lauder brand Aveda - which produces custom-made evening wear from naturally-dyed fabrics that benefit indigenous communities. "I feel like Rumpelstiltskin," joked Katharine Hamnett, (referring to spinning straw into gold) about her new Katharine E Hamnett line which fulfills almost any eco- & fair trade-friendly criteria possible. (Prices range from around $60 for a tee, to $160 for trousers, and just under $300 for a dress.) Adds de Castro – who will be opening a new store in spring 2007 featuring garments fashioned from fabric remnants salvaged off of other designers’ cutting room floors: "Everyone recycles. Based on the blog of dooced (blog-fired) flight attendant Ellen Simonetti (in 2004), this politically incorrect narrative follows the online ramblings of “Queen of Sky,” the alter ego of Elena Guaio, a fun-loving, light-hearted and slightly dysfunctional flight attendant for “Anonymous International Airlines.” 

The book, a novel in blog format, is in keeping with the feel of Simonetti’s original blog: quirky, frank, and un-politically correct. It reveals how Elena’s blog quickly becomes her trusted confidant, which she uses as a release and a tool to sort through the numerous ups and downs of her life. As the months go by, Elena writes more and more candidly about the irritations of her job. She eventually even decides to post pictures of herself on her blog—pictures in her flight attendant uniform. The result of this seemingly innocent act throws her life into complete disarray. And a modern-day David vs. Goliath ensues.
