Glam Shopping Beat column for the week of 8/7/06 - by Lesley Scott:
Hearing the strain of the bagpipes this fall? Many a fashion designer certainly did, reviving that 80s Punk staple: plaid.
From muted, discreet ballgowns at Ralph Lauren, to brightly-hued Members Only-style bombers at D&G, to Brigadoon-worthy kilts at Moschino, Bottega Veneta, and Alexander McQueen, plaid in all its Scottish glory was worked & re-worked by A-list designers. Even runways as varied as Valentino, John Galliano, Kenzo, Junya Watanbe, Balenciaga, Emanuel Ungaro, DSquared, Vivienne Westwood, and Burberry Prorsum all showed plaid.
The key to plaid is to treat it like spice in a recipe: a little goes a very, very long way. Build your outfit around whatever plaid piece you're working by keeping everything else muted and neutral. A can't-miss strategy is to pair a plaid skirt with a simple black top and black leggings, or rock that plaid shirt with the season's black skinny jeans. And plaid pants? Admire from a distance, but stick to more figure-flattering skirts or tops.
For extra fashion flair, try a metallic shoe and bag - especially a tough boot & oversized satchel. And don't worry about mixing your metals - metallic shoes & a bag look freshest when mixed 'n matched with abandon, especially with a more muted, antique'y finish.
