J. Crew Toggle Sweater-An adorable alternative to the Paddongton-style Toggle coat, this warm wooly sweater fits your wardrobe AND your budget-Fashiontribes Fashion Blog

71995_bl8133_hol05_m

What is up with J. Crew?  Whoever they hired to design for them is quite a maverick- it seems, more and more, that I turn to J. Crew for long-lasting basics.  There price has jumped up a little with their new creativity, but you can still find some terrific affordable pieces to pepper your wardrobe with.  Currently, I am obsessing over their Toggle Sweater.  Inspired by my coat pick of the season-the Paddington coat- this woolly sweater has leather and toggle closures, which makes me grin.  I love that you get all the style of my favorite cover-up, and you can rock it all day, indoors and out.  With it's simple shape and large hood, it seems like the ideal winter sweater.

Big Jewelry-particularly bling, as some may refer to it, seems like it is here to stay.  With no decline of  decoration pieces looming on the horizon, it seems that we can now coin items like giant necklaces "investment pieces".  If I am sinking the dough into an item, my pick would be this Theo Fennell cross.  I like the size and chunkiness, but most of all I like the diamond-encrustment.  As they say, diamonds are a girl's best friend.

U.S. Postal Service Breast Cancer Stamp - A Way to Fight Breast Cancer All Year Round...& Besides, You Have to Send Snail Mail Sometimes. FASHIONTRIBES BLOG

Breast_cancer_stamp  Usps_logo

Even though Breast Cancer Awareness Month ends today, there's still ways to contribute to the fight against the disease all year round.

Like buying stamps. As my good friend Saba likes to says, everyone needs stamps for their snail mail, so why not buy ones that contribute to a good cause?

The U.S. Postal Service Breast Cancer stamp donates - by law - 70% of the net amount to the National Institutes of Health, and 30% to the Medical Research Program at the Department of Defense. Since the stamp was first issued on July 29, 1998, it has raised more than $37 million for breast cancer research.

Designed by Maryland artist Ethel Kessler, the stamp features an illustration of the mythical Goddess of the Hunt by Whitney Sherman, and the phrases Fund the Fight & Find a Cure.

Available at USPS.com.

Thomas Paul's Aviary and Victorian themes resin plates hit on 2 of falls hotest trends-in the cutest way possible!-Fashiontribes Home Decor Blog

Yeah, so, I love birds.  I am guessing you probably might have realized this, since my avian fixation  has become painfully evident in the last few weeks.  In order to embrace my inner ornithologist, I feel I should be serving my poultry-free dinners on these Thomas Paul Plates.   With cheeky colourful birds in a very psychedelic pattern, and convenient dinner and desert sizes, they will definitely be the star of my Turkey-day table.  Not so much into the feathered flock?  There are also very of-the-moment Victoriana themed plates up for grabs.

Paula Deen, chef and star of Elizabethtown, makes delicious Hobo Hamburgers-a great dinner idea-Fashiontribes Food Blog

Kate Bosworth Aces the printed dress look-stand out as a style icon with a short, floral dress and a wide sash-Fashiontribes Fashion Blog

Kateb_in_chloe
While Kate Bosworth was pretty much unanimously panned for this Chloe ensemble, I must say I quite liked it.  Besides the fact that she is a child's size 8, I feel that this is a good example of a fun look for the zillions of parties that everyone will be obligated to attend in the coming season.  The sweet shape- mini with belled, over-sized sleeves-can flatter almost everyone (remember-mini is above the knee.  Not everyone should go to this extreme of short).  Her black sash and shoes are a wise choice (they tone down the look) and the fact that she wears but one gold bracelet let's the kooky print do all the talking.  A major thumbs up.

Ah, now that Topshop has come to the U.S. via downtown Manhattan hot spot Opening Ceremony, I have a new disease.  I like to call it Topshopanglophilism.  Mostly because it sounds vaguely medical.  And because, due to my weak constitution, I am magnetized into Opening Ceremony weekly to check out their new stock of Topshop ranges.  I totally scored this Peter Jensen for Topshop dress last week, and I can't wait to rock it with blue leggings (on a side note, blue leggings needed).  I adore the print beyond a sane capacity-the multi-hues chains of people and bunnies holding hands makes me giggle.  And the best part?  It has POCKETS!!!  Any dress with pockets score big with moi.  If the print is too zany for ya, check out his solid navy version.

DIY Rock 'n Roll Crocheted Cuff: Armed w/ Some Metal Wire & Groovy Charms, You're Just a Crochet Hook Away from Your Very Own Biker-Meets-Upper East Side Accessory. FASHIONTRIBES JEWELRY & FASHION BLOG

Skull_charm_1 Skull & Scimitar charms from MartyMagic.com

Okay, put down the dainty, girlie jewelry & no one gets hurt.

Biker/Rock 'n Roll jewelry is the way to go. You sport this kinda jewelry and you start feeling like a badass...laugh in the face of pain...get another tattoo.

The problem with most biker & biker-influenced jewelry is that while it looks cool as hell - from a distance - it's usually not high end enough for my taste, or that well designed. The really good stuff I crave is a bit out of my budget at present.

So why not D.I.Y.? The D.I.Y. Network - DIYNetwork.com - recently invited Brooklyn jeweler Andi Billow - Billoware.com - to show those of us in touch with the darker side of our inner Marthas how to make our own!

ANDI BILLOW'S ROCK 'N ROLL CROCHETED CHAIN METAL CUFF

Diy_r_n_r_crocheted_cuff

MATERIALS:

  • Size 4 crochet hook
  • 28-gauge sterling silver
  • 15-gauge sterling silver
  • 24-gauge sterling silver
  • 15 large soldered sterling silver jump rings
  • Steel block
  • Hammer
  • Mallet
  • Chain nose pliers
  • Round nose pliers
  • Wire cutters
  • File

THE DETAILS:

  1. Diy_r_n_r_jewelry_1 Tie a single knot of 28 gauge wire around crochet hook. Chain stitch 28 stitches.
  2. Reverse direction and crochet for eight rows. Knot the end, leaving a foot of wire. Hammer flat with mallet.
  3. Diy_r_n_r_jewelry_2 Bend a loop in one end of 15 gauge wire with round nose pliers. Measuring against the crocheted body, make a loop in the center, the one for the other end. Cut wire. Repeat for the other side.
  4. For the hook, bend a loop in one end of wire. Leave one inch and cut wire. File end. Place round nose pliers 3/4 to the end and bend back over itself. Insert pliers into end of hook to bend tip up for easier insertion.
  5. To attach first clasp piece: twist wire loop for 1/8 inch and cut. Use chain nose pliers to bend end over, and weave into side of body. Take long wire and sew clasp piece onto body. Knot end and weave into body.
  6. For second clasp piece: Cut a foot of 28 gauge wire. Tie a single knot to one end of body. Sew clasp on. Knot end and weave into body.
  7. To attach hook, bend loop open with chain nose pliers, insert into loop on one side of clasp. Close loop.
  8. To attach charms: Insert one end of 24 gauge wire into charm loop about two inches long. Bend wire and twist together twice. Cut wire at twist. Use chain nose pliers to bend an angle in wire. Use round nose pliers to bend a loop. Insert into crocheted cuff. Holding with chain nose pliers, bend wire around twisted part. Cut the wire, and tuck in end.
  9. Repeat so that there are three rows of five disks.

Once you get the basic technique down, there's no limit to what you can crochet Here's another suggestion from Billow:

Bernard Willhelm's Spears Long Boots is crazy looking-and perfect for those cold winter days when you want to stand out from all the other snowflakes-Fashiontribes Shoe Blog

Spearsbgea

Usually, boots are most definitely not my deal.  This winter, however, I have fallen and fallen hard.  I find myself on the prowl daily for more and more-flat ones, equestrian ones, wedge ones, moccasins, and of course, these Bernard Willhelm Spears Boots.   The soft wedges are just high enough to secure those extra couple of inches I am generally desperate for,  while the suede body assures they go with everything.  My favorite part, however, is the over-sized lace holes accented by 2 pairs of chunky, chunky laces.  With leopard  lining and a furry tongue, they are slightly manic but absolutely genius for all.

Tokyo Motor Show 2005 Picks from "Motor Trend" - Less Quirky Than Before, But Still Some Fun Concept Car Wackiness to Ogle. Plus an Interview w/the designer of Ford's Mercury "Meta One" Concept @ NY Int'l Auto Show- FASHIONTRIBES BLOG, PODCAST & VIDEOBLOG

I love design of any kind - but especially car design & anything super futuristic-y looking. There's just something about all that power, metal, sleek curves & wackiness all wrapped up in one irresistible package.

And then there's the lingo: horsepower, speed, turbocharged, and muscles, muscles, muscles. I mean really, how can I help myself?

Car_show_logo

Car_show_with_girl

Motor Trend - MotorTrend.com - just reported on the recent bi-annual 2005 Tokyo Motor Show, a futuristic metal extravaganza with the theme Driving Tomorrow, and replete with "anime-appearing autos accompanied by alien- and ethereal-looking show girls."

Unlike the massive Frankfurt car show where participants exhibit complete model lines, Tokyo is a more specialized showcase for the new & different. Carmakers have a chance to dazzle & impress with cutting-edge discoveries so new, they aren't yet on the market. Their editors report that this year's show is far less out-there than in previous years, apparently suffering from the same affliction as the recent Spring 2006 fashion shows: way too focus on the business bottom line and not enough on vision, imagination & sheer creativity.

Car_show_eclipse_head_unit ONE STANDOUT: "the dual-display Eclipse AVN7905 double-din head unit that not only bundles a 30-gig hard drive, 7 inch monitor, navigation system, and entertainment system, but allows the driver to view a different image than the front passenger." So while the passenger is being entertained with movies, the driver can monitor the navigation system. (Photo from Cnet.com - on the left is what the driver sees & on the right is the passenger's view - same screen, totally different views. How cool)

HERE ARE SOME OF THE COOL VEHICLES & CONCEPT CARS FROM THE 2005 TOKYO MOTOR SHOW:

2007_bugatti_veyron_1  2007 Bugatti Veyron Priced at $1.2 mil, it may not sell many, but VW's head honcho, Bernd Pischetrieder,  insists it's a bargain - when compared to the cost, to VW, of participating in a single season of the Grand Prix. "This is our Formula 1," he explains. Ah, of course.

Mitsuoka_orochi_nude_top_roadster 2007 Mitsuoka Orochi Nude Top Roadster Despite being unanimously lauded by the Motor Trend staff as Ugliest Car of Show, this roadster is meant to be a "fashion super car...with an overwhelming presence," explains Mitsuoka. Even though there's apparently less going on under the hood than the flashy exterior would suggest, sorry, but I'm a sucker for anything labeled a "fashion super car"...& that's nude to boot.

Car_show_chrysler_akin_concept Car_show_chrysler_akino_doors Chrysler Akino Concept Featuring a bamboo floor, throw pillows & a throw rug, and even sconce-type lighting, the Akino very much lives up to its name, which means "autumn field." According to the designer, also named Akino (Tsuchiya), the Akino (car) is meant to emulate "the soothing, comforting feeling of a living room on the interior, all surrounded by an elegant form," Akino (designer) explains. It "provides an oasis which is designed for a safe, comfortable, and social environment to experience travel on an entirely new level."

Daihatsu_costa  Daihatsu Costa With its breezy, open interior, mesh-covered hammock-like seats, wood deck floor, open rooftop & up-for-anything all-weather utility, Motor Trend compared the Costa to the fun-loving "equivalent of a sandal on wheels...[that] allows its passengers to get away from the everyday in beach sandal fashion." What chick will be able to resist the automotive equivalent of a pair of kicks?

Daihatsu_ufe_iii Daihatsu UFE-III The tiny (133 inches long & 58 inches wide), ultra-thin polymer & aluminum body and aerodynamic shape make this the cheap date of the car world: in what must be biggest understatement by any car maker ever, this "ultra fuel economy" ride gets more than 170 mpg!

Mazda_senku_concept Mazda_senku_concept_interior Mazda Senku Concept This chic alien has doors that slide back, a Wankel engine & what the MT editors dub the "high wacky factor": touch-screen instruments located inside the steering wheel.

Nissan_note_inspired_by_adidas Nissan Note inspired by Adidas Adidas is on fire, of late. A-listers like Stella McCartney are designing workout & tennis ware for them, and now they've inspired the Note, a five-door hatchback with an "athletic" shape. There is a soft covering over the front and tail, and Adidas's signature triple stripes on the seats which are made from removable Velcro.

Nissan_pivo_1 Nissan_pivo_interior  Nissan Pivo Where, oh where, was this car when I was learning to park? Instead of having to reverse, the driver simply turns the passenger compartment. The Pivo - which means "beer" in Polish! - was explicitely designed for chicks to make it easy for them to park, and even has a "plus" sign on the throttle and a "minus" sign on the brake, "so milady doesn't get befuddled," Motor Trend surmises.

Car_show_toyota_iswing Toyota i-swing Like legos, this contraption flexibly adapts to your whims & needs: it can zoom down regular roads when all three of its wheels are engaged, mosey around pedestrians in two-wheel mode - and when two i-swings travel side-by-side, one assumes the role of "master vehicle" and controls the other. But wait, there's more...the artificial intelligence on board communicates with its operator using a virtual-reality character in display units that pop-up by either shoulder - and the character changes based on how the driver behaves. "It's driving, but not as we know it. Yet."

2005 NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW

Earlier this year, I grabbed the Fashiontribes photographer/videographer, Jaxon Hsu, and visited the New York International Auto Show. We tooled around and I videoblogged & podcasted about some of the cooler rides, and then headed over to my scheduled interview with Anthony Prozzi, the fab designer of the Ford Mercury Meta One Concept car.

Carshow127 Carshow018 Carshow070 Carshow019

My initial impression of the show was lots of sleek silhouettes in icy, silvery blues & metallics - very ethereal. There were some fun splashes of earthy colors like pumpkin, a lemon yellow Corvette, and a grass green pickup truck.  Those old school English-looking (but German!) Maybach cars (http://www.maybachusa.com/) showed a striking combo of metallic chocolate with silver doors.

And of course Ferrari had a hot sex-on-wheels red number that was a definitely droolworthy ride.

Carshow148 Carshow131 Carshow137

Then I interviewed Ford designer Anthony Prozzi -- the incredibly cool and personable designer behind the Mercury Meta One concept car.

The theme of the car is responsibility -- it is zero emission (a first), is fabricated from reconstructed and eco-friendly materials, and runs on "renewable" diesel. [Fun fact: this "renewable" fuel is formulated from wolf's urine. Yes, wolf urine -- apparently during combustion, it emits nothing nasty. Go figure.]

From the outside, the Meta One is roomy -- in an almost SUV kinda way -- however, the interior is anything but. According to Prozzi, he was going for the cocoon-like coziness of a cashmere blanket.  The seats are a lush, sexy embrace of chocolate leather, while the interior doors and ceiling are upholstered in a modern poly stretch bathing-suit fabric that's a peaceful sky blue. The dashboard is a swathe of delicious reconstructed blond wood -- no trees were harmed in the making of this ride!

Before he joined Ford five years ago, Prozzi designed menswear for Donna Karan. His design muse is also unusual: American figure skater Michelle Kwan. She's a fast, powerful athlete but executes lightly, and with grace. And Prozzi wants the Meta One to give the same impression -- instead of being all about muscle and horsepower, come across softer and with a light touch.

Here's hoping that a car like this makes it to production sometime soon.

The cooler cars at the car show?

Definitely the Teal'ish blue Hummer concept car that ran on hydrogen (they even had a promo video running featuring Governator Aaaahnohld pimping its virtues). There was also a funky motorized upright-seat contraption from Toyota that kind of resembled a futuristic dental chair.

This really supa'sporty Lexus looked like it was about to take flight, and a muscular metallic chameleon that took on whatever color it happened to reflect. VW had the new Herbie bug on display (so cute!) and the Mini Cooper, while not particularly new, still rocks. And this silver, boxy marshmallow on wheels with the incongruous "tough love" (it pretty much looked anything but) just begged for a road trip with 20 of your best buds.
