Fashiontribes Don'ts-Jessica Simpson makes a fashiontribes felony with her hideous-hooker inspired VMA gear-Clearly, a fashion expert she is not-Fashiontribes.com blog

Simpson
So, uh, not much to really poke fun at here, because it's so obvious even the "fashion reviewers" at Star picked it out as the worst of the week.  I'll give it a half-hearted attempt though:  In this terrible choice of fabric (can't be classified as clothing) Jessica Simpson looks like a complete slut.  Her ugly, hideous, distracting shirt can't manage to stay on.  Items like this weren't designed for girls who- as her dad proudly crowed- has Double D's.  Her shorts are pulled up so high, I am getting a wedgie.  Burn it all. Please.  As a gift to humanity.

Britney Spears is a gross fat cow- How did the cute girl we once knew tranform into a monster-Star Weekly points out her flaws-Fashiontribes.com

Gross_brit

I know celebrity life takes it's toll or whatever, but I ate lunch right before I opened up Star Weekly, and I have been to the bathroom 3 times since I saw this picture.  Aren't you supposed to be at your healthiest when your preggers?  This girl shouldn't be a rolemodel for dirt.  Someone needs to euthanize her.

Robindira Nest Rings, as seen in Elle Magazine, are the perfect piece of jewelry for a fall fashion expert-Fashiontribes.com blog

Nests
Drawing Inspiration from several exotic locales, jewelry designer Robindira Unsworth is channeling Kashmir into this ring.  Available with chalcedony, moonstone and turquoise stones and in gold and silver, the unique shape and quirky design make this piece beyond covet-able.  Since giant rings will always be cool, this is a terrific investment-especially given it's $165 price tag, much less than most fine jewelry.  Dubbed the nest, as it's metal cradles it's stone like a nest cradles a bird, these rings are right up the funky girls alley.

Fashion Dos & Don’ts – NYC – It's Easy to Take on the World When You're Stylishly Outfitted in a Pleated Skirt, Fun Necklace & Kickin' Accessories. Fashion Expert Man-on-the-Street Report from New York's Soho - FASHIONTRIBES FASHION BLOG

Prowling the streets of Soho, this chic goddess burst onto our fashion radar. This is just the type of fashionista I want to be when I grow up.

The pleated skirt paired with simple-but-perfect fitting tee, effortlessly stylish coiffure, & adorable necklace of mini-globes strung into a choker - from a children's store of all places...how clever! - she is one major chic do.

A big Fashiontribes thumbs up!

Fashion Don'ts-Short shorts and big boots is a fashion attrocity no fashion expert can bear to see-Fashiontribes.com blog

Img_1273
This girl is the most crushing form of don't-the almost right don't.  With her cute, short denim shorts and great vintage button-up, she could be dashingly chic.  Her purple Balenciaga?  terrific.  So what possessed her to stick on clunky Frye boots with this combo?  The boots not only shorten her leg, but look inappropriate with those shorts.  To make matters worth, it was about 90 degrees the day this pic was snapped, so you know she is dying of heat stroke.  Stick on some chic flats and turn this don't
into a do.

Fashiontribes Do's- Tory Burch gets the Street Fashion Gold Star for being an expert in Proenza Schouler at the Men's Vogue/Polo launch party-Fashiontribes.com blog

16m_1
Tory Burch proves at the Men's Vogue/Polo party at Pastis that she still has it.  This fabulous combo-by Proenza Schouler- looks chic and cool at the same time.  Love, love, love the long belted dress.  The cardigan is an unexpected but genius twist-it adds a bit of punkish attitude.  With simple black shoes, a great alligator belt and minimal jewelry, Tory looks absolutely terrific.  A big, fat gold star for her sleek look.

Marc by Marc Jacobs resort has me itching for warm weather so I can wear this dress like a fashion expert-Fashiontribes.com blog

Dress
So now that fall fashion has been in stores for (egads) 2 months, why not start to ponder the question of resort.  My first reaction, is, naturally, to wonder who the hell buys resort.  I certainly don't need spring clothes mid-winter, because NYC is icy cold at that time, and save for my over-heated apartment I am not going anywhere tropical, thanks.  Then I changes my mind, because I want this dress.  With it's sleek lines and halter neck, the dress is perfectly sophisticated.  I totally feel I can work it into my daily winter wardrobe with tights.  Of course, the buttons only add to the appeal, as does the belt.  Daddy, I want it now.

Ted Rossi bangles in this fall's rich velvet jewel tones will make you look like a fashion expert. Thanks, Shop Etc.-Fashiontribes.com blog

Mediumvelvetm
Shop Etc. highlighted velvet-wrap bangles as a great fall trend.  Lee Angel has them available for $95 a piece.  We found these Ted Rossi bangles, which are slightly more affordable, at Ted Rossi.com.  The bangles are encased in silver, black and jewel toned velvet, which makes them beautiful and on target with fall's trends.  With jewelry appearing to stick around as a trend to follow, these babies will make it fun and easy.  Not into velvet?  He has whipsnake ones as well!

Anna Wintour's Children are following closely in her footsteps- Although, with a fashion expert mother, I would have picked a different dress-Fashiontribes.com blog

06m
It seems Anna Wintour's puppies, of sorry, children, have the best of fashion life up on offer for them.  Here they are at the launch of Men's Vogue in conjunction with Polo.  Her daughter, Bee, is always pictures with her or at events she is at.  My question, is- if your mom is Anna Wintour, why is this the dress you pick out?  Why not something fabulous and Lanvin and McQueen.  This dress is so not spectacular.  It appears she has the ice queen face down though.  I guess mummy can't impart everything on you.

Dolce_diva_anne Dolce_diva_leigh Divas Leigh & Anne - corporate lawyer types by day...& fabulous pretty much the rest of the time. As chicks who weren't "born yesterday", they pooh-pooh various nonsense American notions of life ending at 40. Wisely eschewing everything from ridiculous self help books for dealing with this non-crisis ("How to Stay Useful", "How to Find Meaning Again", "Time of Mid-life"), peri-menopausal fairy tales, and sensible footwear - pointing out that all that cash blown on treating "conditions" like peri-whatevers could have been much more wisely splurged on fun and fabulous shoes...and we're talking spiky, towering-heeled maneaters thankyou!

Fashion Don't- Lindsay Lohan commits a Fashiontribes Felony- These shorts are innapropriately short-Thanks to JustJared.com for the tip-Fashiontribes.com blog

Lindsaylohannopants16
I love Lindsay Lohan for the adorable girl and Fashion Icon she has become.  However, this proves that everybody slips up sometimes.  Just Jared (JustJared.blogspot.com, we love you Jared) brought this combo to our attention.  From the look of this picture, it appears that Lindsay is wearing only a mini-mini dress and a giant bag, with no bottoms.  Later investigation proves she is wearing short, short, short shorts that are basically completely inappropriate.  While her flow-y top is adorable, she really should have put something on her bottom that doesn't make her look so trash-tastic.  Definitely not a good look.

E. Vogel Custom boots are fabulous-With fall fashion being all about the boot, be a fashion expert with your own pair of custom designed beauties-Fashiontribes.com blog

5333
With boots on the rise this season, I had decided in my head that I wanted to get a pair of custom equestrian boots to wear with wool-y tights and dresses, as well as skinny jeans.  Flipping through Lucky Magazine, literally just after having this thought, I find in their resources E. Vogel boots.  Vogel has a tiny storefront near Chinatown.  Known for providing boots for most of the U.S. Equestrian team, E. Vogel has been at their craft for years.  My pick is these 3-strap boots, which can be ordered in a variety of colours and leathers.  While the look is pure equestrian, the style is endless.  With a hefty $700 price-tag, they are a well-worth-it investment.

Fashion Don'ts-Fashiontribes Felonies-NYC Man on the Street-Don't be a bag person, plan your clothes and accesories for comfort and function-Fashiontribes.com blog

Img_1218
This woman appears to liken Soho to trekking around the desert.  If she didn't feel this way, why would she be apparently carrying everything she knows on her back?  With a giant backpack as well as a basket (which is tack-ily empty) and a purse, it seems her baggage is overkill.  To add to my misery, she is donning a camo skirt, which we should all realize is beyond terrible at this point.  With a tattered t-shirt and flip flops, it is absolutely clear she doesn't care at all about her appearance, which should never happen.  Even running errands requires a little style.

Gabriel_cousens_picIf you're going to be in NYC on Saturday, September 10th, don't pass up a rare opportunity to hear Gabriel Cousens, MD speak at the fabulous Jivamukti Yoga Center, 404 Lafayette St. 3rd Fl., from 7 pm to 10 pm about his recent book Spiritual Nutrition: Six Foundations for Spiritual Life and the Awakening of Kundalini (North Atlantic Books). It's $45 in advance, $50 if you procrastinate until the day of the event - & the price includes a copy of the book (a $30 value!).

To register, call Jivamukti at 212.353.0214 or visit JivamuktiYoga.com.

Spiritual_nutrion_bookjacket A dense, scholarly tome, Spiritual Nutrition outlines everything from the optimal yogic diet for a spiritual life, to how to alchemically transform your body and mind to become a "superconductor" for the divine. In addition to a Q&A and meditation session, he'll also be signing copies of the book.  As an added bonus for vain fashionistas (ah hem...such as yours truly), following the guidelines in Spiritual Nutrition is a virtually failsafe way to bring about some outer gorgeousness along with your inner beauty.

To check out the recent in-depth Fashiontribes podcast interview with Dr. Cousens, CLICK HERE. He's a fascinating interview & the blog kind of summarizes everything important (it's sort of like the Clif's Notes to the book).

Chloe vest with Sequined lapel- totally amazing with any outfit, plus a fashion expert item we idolize-fashiontribes.com blog

11506_index11506_fr

So if you are reading this blog at all- and I assume that's what you do here, as opposed to other things- then you are fully aware that my obsession with vests has grown to absolute fever pitch.  I am scouring the city for old and new, expensive and cheap, denim and non.  To my absolute gleeful surprise, Net-A-Porter, the place for high-end on the web, has just posted this beauty from Chloe.  I love the cropped fit and the old-fashioned details.  But, most of all, I love the sequin lapels.  They drive me nuts.  Seriously, I would make this go with everything.  E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G.

Fashion Don'ts- Fashiontribes Felony-- Jeans that are too tight and a belly shirt make a bad pairing- Especially since no Fashion Expert would like this look-Fashiontribes.com blog

Img_1271_1
I am not sure that this fault actually needs to be pointed out.  Clearly, as anyone with even half a brain could figure out, there is an issue with size and proportion occurring here.  Let's begin with the jeans.  While yesterday was by no standard "melting-ly hot" in NYC, jeans this tight are really uncomfortable looking when the mercury hits above 80.  I also figure they must be uncomfortable because they are causing her to bulge above the waistband.  She is clearly tiny, so why not buy the proper size jean?  No one wants to look like sausage coming out of it's casing.  To compliment the donut occurring at her waist, she chose 2 cropped tops.  Wrong answer.  Something fitted and waist length would look 1000000000000 times better.

MTV's My Super Sweet 16 shines a whole new light on spoiled rotten rich kids-and trust us, a fashion expert these kids are not-Fashiontribes.com

Sweet_16
So complaining abut reality TV has roughly the same effect as bitching about the sky being blue.  Like it or not, it's a permanent situation with no hopes of alteration on my part.  So, I figure, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.  I have become completely obsessed with MTV's Monday night lineup- Laguna Beach and My Super Sweet 16, particularly the latter.  There is something enthralling about watching a moron-parent dump money on a child.  The only thing is- it's hard to believe the things that come out of the mouths of babes.  I mean, I realize that it's probably the parent's fault for giving a 15 year old a birthday party worth $200,000, but if these were my children I would be in jail for child abuse and possibly murder.  These wretched beings (excluding the 2 girls on the very first episode of the first season) seem so self absorbed and obnoxious that the bitching and moaning about how they don't get there way makes one feel frazzled.  I am sure MTV edits them heavily, but they still make these comments- "I deserve everything I want", "I Love money", etc.  I wonder why I don't quit watching to do something that doesn't drive me as insane.  Then I remember-this garbage is basically heroin.

Gwen Stefani and Lindsay Lohan do the twinsy thing at the VMA's in Miami- Not exactly the mark of a fashion expert says The Superficial-Fashiontribes.com blog

The Superficial-Lindsay Lohan and Gwen Stefani like leopard

When I was in 4th grade, my best friend Sabrina and I would call each other at night to prep our outfits for the next day.  Usually, this involved variations on the same theme- purple scrunch socks, black leggings, giant t-shirt with t-shirt scrunchy, side ponytail (remember, it was the 80's).  As cute as it seems now, we probably looked like the 2 biggest losers to crawl the face of the earth.  It must suck to be Gwen Stefani and walk into an awards show to find you are twinsies with Lindsay Lohan.  Maybe L.A. should have stylist pow-wows to ensure that this crap doesn't happen, because I want to make fun of everybody for different reasons.  I hate killing 2 birds with one stone.  Anyhow, the point is that clearly Gwen looks superior...

MaxMara's West Broadway Store Window's- with fun details and sarkiling touches, MaxMara looks super chic-Fashiontribes.com blog

MaxMara was never a name I really payed attention too in the greater scheme of things, until last year when they did this adorable, embroidery rich swing dress which I purchased and well got my wear out of last winter.  With a very classic and simple style, and superb details (think heavy brass buttons and delicate beading), MaxMara- known for woolly, wonderful coats- has become quite the contender.  Their windows showcased a great, rich purple top and a military-inspired denim jacket along with some lovely, gauzy, beaded pieces.

Fashion Don'ts-A Fashiontribes Felony-This Lady in NYC's Chinatown didn't pick the right size of shirt or skirt- somewhere, a fashion expert is cringing-Fashiontribes.com blog

Img_1270
The unfair thing about this situation is I had just eaten before witnessing this atrocity.  I mean, the scary thing here is that someone SOLD her these items.  Someone saw her purchasing this and let her walk out of the store.  I say burn it all.  The top is clearly about 15 times smaller than her body.  Paired with an obviously ill-fitting bra, what we have is rolls, slouchy boobs and back fat.  Gross.  Then, to add insult to injury, this skirt is also clearly a size or 5 too small, and it appears it may have been made from scrap fabric that survived a pirate-ship battle.  The tattered ends and awkward length don't help to slim her out in any way.  Lesson learned?  Clothes that fit and don't draw negative attention.

Fresh's In Flight Kit will save your skin through all travel experiences-Fashiontribes.com blog

Inflight2
My skin is quite plagued.  It seems that whether I travel by plane or car, my skin comes out as damaged goods-dry and irritated. Fresh, whom I adore for their line of Sugar products, has come out with a kit specifically designed for the painful ups and downs of travel.  With extra gentle lotus-pomegranate face wipes to keep your face feeling fresh and clean, an In-Flight mask with moringa and a Post-Flight Serum with Green Coffee, they have all their bases covered.  The towelettes keep your skin feeling, err, fresh.  The mask seriously helps your skin feel as if it miraculously retaining moisture, and the post-flight serum makes you look illuminated- a far cry from the usual jet lag.  The only down side?  The $130 price tag.

Fashion Expert Pet Peeve- If you wear high, high heels please be able to walk in them-Fashiontribes.com blog

Duganamn
So, as we know, I am a girl who adores my high heels.  I love the extra height-trust me, at 5'3" I will do anything for a boost.  However, if you are going to prop yourself up to toddle around the city streets, be sure to select a heel you can actually walk in.  At a reasonable pace.  Please.  If I see one more girl waddle/stumbling in slow motion down the block because she chose shoes that clearly aren't meant for walking, I am going to kick her feet out from under her.  Not only is it painful to watch, I imagine it is a painful experience for the wearer.  Keep in mind that certain shoes are occasional, and wear something that, at least not sensible, is move-able.

Fashiontribes Do's-Kirsten Dunst gives good fashion expert at the 2005 VMA's in Miami-Fashiontribes.com blog

Pressrm_03_2

Although many of our favorite blogs (The Superficial and Just Jared) will disagree, I think Kirsten Dunst has fabulous style.  Her look at the VMA's is the perfect example of how chic she is.  Besides cute, loose hair and glowing makeup, Kirsten paired this drop-waisted, shimmering dress with Vivienne Westwood pumps.  Keeping her colour-scheme and jewels simple, she makes her sparkling dress stand out.  While her shoes are unique, they look swell in simple black.  Her choices clearly show why she has become a cult fashion icon.

Flannel and Western Button Up Shirts- perfect for a fall fashion expert-Fashiontribes.com blog

Nic_1

Given how chic Nicole Richie has been of late, it's no wonder she is rocking this cool button up, which happens to be Jill Stuart.  This fall, I am totally feeling the button up shirt- be it flannel or western.  My particular vision is of a tihgt, lumberjack plaid flannel with the cuffs rolled up and some little shorts and tights, or perhaps a snug pair of Tsubis.  Cacharel sent a totally sweet version down their runway.  With the various looks of the season, I say why not ressurect Davy Crockett.

Fashion Do's-Fashiontribes Gold Star Streetwear for a chic tank dress/bag/boot combo-this Girl is a fashion expert says our Man on the Street-Fashiontribes.com blog

Img_1267_3

Rare is the case when something catches my eye for a positive reason as I exit the train at Canal and Broadway.  All too often, the reason I notice something is because of it's atrocity.  This girl is most definitely an exception.  Not only does she look chic, but her outfit is forcing me to eat my words.  As you can see, she is wearing cowboy boots, yet they look awesome.  I have previously said they should be done for, but this is a shining example of how to make them chic.  Paired with a simple-yet-fabulous tank dress, just the right amount of jewelry- a necklace and some delicate bangles, and a classic-as-can-be bag, the outfit draws attention by NOT drawing attention.  Understated and  fashionable-ideal for a hot summer day.
