For a fun date spot, or even a cool place to gather with a group of culinarily-minded friends who like to order a bunch of dishes for sharing, put Bombay Talkie on your list.
Based on the "street" foods of India, they feature everything from the fun, yummy snack foods that Indian school kids get to much on, to delicious rest-stop staples for Indian families on road trips.
There are tons of vegetarian options on the menu - the Beggar's Purse appetizer (mint-flavored morsels in crispy egg-sized shells) and the Dosas were particularly good, and the vegetable dishes we all shared for the main course rocked, especially the chickpeas and the eggplant -- spread on warm Naan....heaven! (The carnivores in the group raved about the chicken special they split.)
For dessert, simply cross the street. It's all about cupcakes at Billy's Bakery. The gossip: Billy used to work at the Magnolia Bakery, the cupcake capital of the Western world conveniently located in the West Village. The amount of poetic waxing that goes on regarding these cupcakes makes you wonder if crack is one of the ingredients.
Aaaaanyway, Billy defected & set up his own shop, featuring, you guessed it: cupcakes. And with sprinkles, just as cupcakes should be served. They also have a divine red velvet cake, a decadent looking peanut butter & chocolate creation, and even an ice-box cake - chocolate biscuits iced with whipped cream, layered together and then frosted with another layer of whipped cream, & refrigerated to create a "cake" (regardless of what it is, just try to resist!).
