Faking the Summer Glow -- Cosmetic Special Effects

It's the Fourth of July and what better time to hit the beach, boat, lake, pool or backyard. If you have been a "good girl", you have been using your sunblock religiously and  are probably pretty "white" -- in fact too pale to go out without 1) sunblock and 2) some faux color.

While it's not too late to self-tan (start NOW!), you do need a bit of help faking the all over body glow as well as the face glow. Here are some great products to help you get through the ghostly pallor and will  make it
easy to "fake" it when it comes to being bronze and beautiful.

1) Start with body products first since they take a bit longer to apply ---and dry-- and you don't want streaks. By using a temporary body bronzing cream after you have done your self-tanning, any streaks or missed spots will be covered! It's finally summer! One wonders if it was ever going to get here with the weather being so off and on-- one wonders whether bronzer is the thing to wear when it's pouring rain outside. Luckily with the  SUPERNATURAL Collection from NARS Cosmetics, it's more than just bronzes and golden hues.

This lovely collection allows you to go sheer and neutral courtesy of the fabulous colors or very dramatic for evening  or during vacation daytime. It allows you to play with both demure and bewitching looks.

Depending on the eye color-- and the depth of color you want-- line with indigo color and use the deeper purple shade in the outer V/crease of the eye. Or do the reverse for a more unique look particularly if you are wearing blue or have blue eyes. It will make them pop. Make sure you do a fine line with a tiny brush for the liner close to the lashes and slightly smudge into lashes (not up, but down into lashes) to fill in the gaps between lashes.  Make sure to use a blender brush to smooth out the edges.

Looking for a more neutral look -- try  Granada cream shadow-- a soft shimmer light golden bronze for that soft neutral that will wipe out any shadows.

If you are looking for a neutral  eye but with more definition, you can combine the cream with   Stage Beauty or use it by itself. No matter how you use this duo--with the deeper color on the lid or in the crease or as a liner with the lighter color as an all-over wash, the look will be clean yet sophisticated.

Don't forget to give a bit of glow to the cheeks.

Use Gueule de Nuit  for a peachy-coral glow. The creamy texture melts into your skin for a "lit within" glow and dust either Orgasm or Sertao lightly over this and blend.

For lips choose whatever color you want or if you want that gilded, glistening look, try the  Caraibe a golden shimmer that blends well over nude lips or over any other color to neutralize it and give it that shimmer.

I don't know if you are a fragrance junkie- many don't like to have a stable or revolving table of fragrances to choose from. Some people like to stick with one signature scent. I used to be that way-- until I became a beauty editor and then suddenly, there was NO turning back.

I love trying new fragrances-- particularly those from  Comptoir Sud Pacifique.  CSP as it is affectionately known by its fan base has a slew of tropically based scents that are delicious, fragrant and enchanting.  Two of their newest ones are vanilla-based scents (a base for which they are rightfully famous)  that are an unusual blend of tropical scents mixed with vanilla into intoxicating blends that are sure to please most everyone  who loves fruity scents or vanilla scents or both!

VANILLE CITRUS is an unusual blend of citrus and vanilla and some might think that it wouldn't work but CSP has worked its fragrance magic and created an "experience" in a spray can.  Travel to the Caribbean and South of France  and you would get a similar sort of feel--particularly with the blend of chocolate, vanilla cream and sugared milk so tied to the French lifestyle. It's light, playful, fun and fresh. Definitely something great for a light daytime (or subtle evening) scent.

Top notes:  Candied lemon peel, brazilian orange, blackcurrant syrup
Heart Notes:  Tahitian vanilla, hibiscus flower, sweet rose jam

VANILLE PINEAPPLE  is definitely a  favorite of mine. I love the fresh tang of pineapple and I am known as a "pineapple addict"  around my place. If  there is pineapple in a recipe or a drink, typically I have it! So this was a "slam dunk" choice for me. Distinctly tropical with a rich feeling of Hawaii (and I so love being in Hawaii eating fresh pineapple too), this is a luscious tangy fragrance that is sure to please and is underscored with a vanilla cream richness. Certain other notes like passionfruit underscore the fruity feel while cinnamon, frangipani and musk create a more exotic scent so that it's not overly sweet or fruity but has that "bite" that  certainly will wear well throughout the day --or night. It's like bringing the tropics home with you .. and it's lush scent is intoxicating.

Top Notes: Pineapple
Heart Notes:  Passionfruit, vanilla cream, cinnamon, frangipani
Base Notes: Vanilla sugar, coconut milk, musk

Every woman loves to have great looking eyes and one of the ways to achieve that is through the use of mascara. It makes  so-so lashes look lush with a darker color and slightly longer length.  Yet despite the effort we put into this "wonder" product, almost every woman has gone a couple rounds with  a mascara that hasn't been cooperative when it comes to washing it off.

It's not every day that Warren Tricomi opens a salon in LA. The fact that one has opened so quietly that I about had whiplash when I drove past it, made me crazy that I hadn't heard about the grand opening. Typical of Warren-Tricomi, they are not the loud, boisterous people that you may see on TV but really cool guys who believe in stellar cuts and color with serious attention to detail and quality products.

Warren-Tricomi recently partnered with Kaz Amor, an amazingly gifted Redken colorist who travels all over lecturing and demonstrating color technique when he's not working on celebrity heads like:

What's great about Kaz is that he treats everyone the same-- with the same low-key, "let's make you look fabulous" sort of attitude. (Gotta' love that!). What I loved when I was there was the time and attention Kaz spent on my hair-- given that it's curly and colored with some spots of grey, it gets complex.  By the time I walked out, I was thrilled with how great my color was and the balance that Kaz had achieved. Shiny, glossy, feels and looks phenomenal. Redken products are all that and more!! And so is Kaz!

Also kudos to Theodore Leaf who worked with Kaz on doing my hair. He's a doll and really  talented and very friendly.

Jouer Cosmetics is a different "breed" of cosmetic companies. The podcast features an interview with founder, Christina Zilber who talks about what Jouer is and how it fits into your lifestyle.
